Born in Puglia, Italy in 1982, designer Alessandro Vigilante initially began his career as a professional dancer. He studied at the School of Ballet of Tuscany and then at the Mas Music Arts & Show in Milan, where he discovered and was transformed by the revolutionary technique of American choreographer Merce Cunningham, whose approach to the concepts of deconstruction, stasis and movement later formed the inspirations behind Vigilante’s design. During this same period, he also discovered the theatrical choreography of the German Pina Bausch, an icon of both art and style from whom he learnt to observe and admire the humanity and emotionality of the body. Vigilant quickly left his life as a dancer and moved into the fashion industry, initially working for Dolce & Gabbana, Gucci, and finally Lorenzo Serafini before branching out on his own with his debut collection aptly named ‘Pina meets Merce’ for the SS2021 season.
