Born in Uruguay, Gabriela Hearst grew up on her family’s 17,000-acre ranch surrounded by horses, cattle and sheep, where the notion of luxury meant things were beautifully crafted and made to last. After more than a decade spent working in design in New York, Gabriela honored her family’s heritage through the launch of her eponymous label in Fall 2015. Her mission was to create a brand that reflected a slower pace and process: where each piece is made with care and purpose and tradition trumps trend. The designer’s commitment to creating contemporary collections without compromising her ethics involves considering where materials come from and who is making them. Gabriela Hearst upholds rigorous sustainability standards: from earth-friendly materials to compostable, bio-based alternatives to traditional plastic packaging, and multiple partnerships with various environmental and social justice organizations such as EON and Save the Children, the company’s pioneering practices are truly admirable. The British Fashion Council awarded Gabriela as an Environment Honoree for her contributions to creating positive change within the industry at the 2020 Fashion Awards, and in 2021, she was awarded the Frank Alvah Parsons Award for Sustainability.
