Unboxing…

Perhaps one of the most interesting byproducts of the social media revolution, exhibitionism aside, is the expansion of a hyper-personalized creative universe. A vast space in which individuals—from the relatively obscure to pop-culture superstars—can craft and share their personal projections of self. It’s a space where originality and individualism shine through: the more colorful, authentic and altogether different one’s download into our social metaspace is, the more positive the reinforcement through the currency of likes, shares and comments.

This frictionless flow of information and inspiration across the social landscape seems to have played a part in eroding the traditionally one-dimensional constructs of an individual’s role in the world—making it easier for one person to tap into a multitude of talents and interests as they craft a more dynamic digital expression of themselves. In this creatively fluid social space, it’s exciting to see how this fresh ideative symbiosis is powering layered forms of self-revelation, and self-expression.

Few people embody this type of Renaissance dimensionality better than our December cover star, Teyana Taylor. The multitudinous talent, who tapped superstar status as a singer, songwriter, actress, dancer, choreographer, director and model, is a woman charged with a sense of perpetual initiative. In “Star on the Rise,” we sit down with Teyana on the brink of her forthcoming (and final) tour to talk about her groundbreaking career and how she, as she explains it, has “always been the type who’s been into a little bit of everything. [She’s] never put [herself] in one box. [She’s] not plugged into one outlet, so [she’s] always identified with everything.” Read on to see what the megastar and creative genius has planned for us next!

Unboxing oneself is a theme similarly, and poignantly, woven throughout the Los Angeles edition of our Groundbreakers portfolio. The compelling lineup of L.A.-based digital content creatives, who all found independent success in their respective fields, were interviewed separately but share mirror image roadmaps to realizing success through the pursuit of a multitude of passions. Digital entrepreneur Alyssa Coscarelli (@alyssainthecity) captures it best: “Be OK not boxing yourself in. The past five to 10 years, I haven’t known where I’m heading. But at the end of the day, I just had to come to terms with the fact that I’m not going to box myself into a title just to satisfy someone else… and neither should you.”

It’s an ethos that digital creative and international style arbiter Camille Charrière echoes in “Camille Charrière Wants You to Come Undone.” The multi-hyphenate pivoted from finance to fashion and shares her latest adventures in this compelling recount of a life and career amorphously defined, but solidly anchored in purpose and passion.

For some less metaphorical unboxing, we’ve also tapped the industry’s leading tastemakers for the must-have gifts topping their well-curated holiday wish lists. From homeware to ready-to-wear, it’s a lust-inducing compilation that will undoubtedly spark some excitement for the season ahead!

Our wish for you is that this issue sparks a similar passion to unbox your own limitless power and potential this holiday season, and for the New Year ahead.

Enjoy the issue!
