Borrowing its title from Dante’s masterwork, the Latin word for Hell, the highly anticipated adaption of the third book in the best-selling Robert Langdon series has the added component of a psychological thriller and finds the titular character on a trail of clues tied to the father of the Italian language himself.

At the beginning of the film the famous symbolist, played by Tom Hanks, wakes up in Italian hospital with amnesia, teaming up with Dr. Sienna Brooks, portrayed by Felicity Jones, in the hope of recovering his memories. Hanks explains, “Hell for Langdon in the movie is both a state of mind and a very physical experience

Together, the pair race across Europe to stop a madman from unleashing a global virus that would halve the world’s population.

This is really a contemporary story about paranoia, fear of governments, and who we can trust – Felicity Jones

Once again, the international setting of the tale Dan Brown has spun offered Ron Howard a chance to surround Hanks and Jones with a cast of global actors: the French actor Omar Sy as Christoph Bouchard; Indian star Irrfan Khan as Harry Sims; Danish actress Sidse Babett Knudsen as Dr. Elizabeth Sinskey and  Ben Foster, an American, as the bioengineer Bertrand Zobrist.

Location plays a pivotal role in the narrative, most notably Florence. Aside from the obvious Dante connection, the city’s rich history and cinematic landscape provided the backdrop for some of the film’s most captivating moments. In one particularly thrilling sequence, Langdon and Sienna are chased through the grand gardens of Palazzo Pitti, before escaping to the Vasari Corridor, a hidden passageway that runs the length of the Ponte Vecchio and Uffizi Gallery.

October saw director, author and cast return to Florence for the first time since shooting wrapped. Three days of press conferences and photo calls culminating in the worldwide premier of Inferno at the Teatro dell’Opera, October 8th.
