What inspired you to start BITE Studios in 2016, and what did you do before launching the brand?

BITE was born out of an uncompromising vision to merge sustainability with design in an innovative way. Veronika and I both had somewhat unconventional paths at the School of Economics, driven by our deep interests in fashion, art, and sustainability. Our connection was immediate — it was love at first sight when we met on a staircase, and since then, we’ve been working together, both in business and life. We also have a daughter together. Veronika comes from a small town on the west coast, and I’m from Västerbotten in the north of Sweden. We’ve always felt a strong need to shape our own world, and BITE is the result of that shared desire. It represents a deep respect for those who came before us, while also holding a longing for the future — a yearning for “something more.” This duality between honoring the past and looking to the future is the essence of BITE. The fashion industry is exciting, but it’s also one of the most polluting industries in the world. The scale of the environmental impact is staggering. Right now, 65% of all newly produced materials are made from polyester, and the industry is plagued by massive overproduction. Polyester garments can take up to 200 years to decompose. Multiply that by the scale of production, and it’s clear just how significant the problem is. At BITE, our product development focuses on tackling these issues. We collaborate closely with our material suppliers, ensuring we use only the finest, most sustainable materials. In our latest collection, less than 1% of the fabric was synthetic. We prioritizied using beautiful, organic, and natural fibers. Once you experience BITE, you’ll never want to return to conventional fashion. The quality is incomparable and the materials are far purer. BITE offers a refreshing alternative that you can feel good about wearing.

As a couple, how do you collaborate on the design process, and what unique perspective do each of you bring?

Our collaboration is grounded in a shared commitment to the future of our planet, but it’s enriched by the distinct perspectives we each bring. And of course, the support of our incredible team. Veronika has a keen eye for detail and design, while I focus on the broader vision, exploring how sustainability and innovation can drive the industry forward. Together, we balance creativity with purpose. Being partners in both life and design allows us to challenge and inspire each other. This ensures that what we create is not only beautiful, but also meaningful.

What have been the most valuable lessons and surprising challenges you’ve encountered since starting BITE Studios?

One of the most valuable lessons we’ve learned is the power of patience and persistence. Building a sustainable brand requires a slower, more intentional approach — something that can feel at odds with an industry driven by speed and overproduction. However, staying true to our vision of quality, materiality and enduring design has shown us that taking the time to do things properly not only aligns with our values but also yields lasting rewards. Probably our biggest challenge has been finding the balance between innovation and tradition. While we are committed to pushing for progressive design and sustainable solutions, we also hold a deep respect for the craft and artistry of garment-making. Navigating this balance has been both a challenge and an opportunity, and it has ultimately shaped BITE into the brand it is today.

Your Swedish roots and commitment to sustainability clearly influence your designs. Can you share how these elements shape your aesthetic and goals?

Our Swedish roots and deep respect for nature are at the core of BITE’s aesthetic and purpose. Growing up in northern Sweden, my family has a history of living off of nature for generations. This is how I developed a holistic understanding of natural resources and social justice. My mother grew up in a remote village deep in the forest with only two houses. She had to ski a long distance just to reach the nearest grocery store. My mother’s journey shaped my world view. From being born on the periphery of the world to becoming a prominent professor, starting the Centre for Gender Research, and writing books on subjects like friendship and death. She was an exceptional human being, kind and ambitious. But no matter how hard she worked she always had time for my brother and me with empathy and a kind sense of direction. I wanted to make her proud; to show her that I understood the nuances in her work and respected our roots. BITE grew out of this. Working with exceptional natural materials is not just a choice for us — it’s a matter of dignity. Drawing inspiration from the raw beauty of northern Sweden, we blend it’s simplicity with a progressive edge, creating designs that are both respectful and forward-thinking.

What gaps in the fashion industry were you aiming to address with your brand, and how do you feel you’ve filled them?

There is a lack of substance and genuine value in our industry. We all have just one life, and through our careers, we choose the direction we want to help steer the world in. Right now, we’re at a critical juncture in history where integrity and conviction are needed more than ever. I believe many people are craving design that combines core values with a visual vision for a future that is not only solution-driven but also exciting and creatively inspiring. With BITE, we aim to fill that gap offering a brand that speaks to both the heart and the mind and creating pieces that stand for something more.

What role do your material library and conscious fabric sourcing play in your creative process, and what are your favorite materials to work with?

Materiality is at the heart of our design process. The fabrics we work with are not just materials — they’re a source of inspiration that shapes the aesthetic of each collection from the very beginning. We take a hands-on approach, collaborating closely with our suppliers to develop exceptional materials. Our material library grows season by season with a long-term vision to build on our house qualities. In our latest collection, less than 1% of the fibers were synthetic. Instead, we focused on beautiful, organic, natural materials that align with our commitment to sustainability.

What’s one surprising fact you’ve learned about sustainable materials, and why is conscious fashion important to you?

One fact that we find deeply troubling is that upstream production accounts for up to 70% of the fashion industry’s environmental impact, with the majority coming from material production. This highlights the unsustainability of the industry’s heavy reliance on polyester. For us, conscious fashion isn’t just about creating beautiful garments — it’s about making intentional and modern choices.

How do you envision people feeling and experiencing your designs, and where do you imagine them wearing them?

Wearing our pieces is both a tactile and luxurious experience. The purity of the fabrics feels effortless yet refined against the skin. We want our designs to seamlessly accompany the BITE woman through every aspect of life. From intimate moments at home to more sophisticated occasions. Each piece offer an effortless elegance and a deep sense of connection to the wearer, making each piece not just something to wear, but something to feel.

What are your hopes for the future of BITE Studios and the fashion industry as a whole? What advice do you have for a consumer who wants to start making more conscious fashion choices today?

We’re excited to continue growing our community of like-minded women and individuals who share our vision for a brighter future. We hope to expand this collective energy and further shape the world around what BITE stands for — vibrant, purposeful design that evolves alongside the changing needs of the planet. For consumers who want to start making more conscious fashion choices today, we’d advise them to choose quality over quantity. Invest in pieces that are true to your individual style, versatile, and made from sustainable materials. Every thoughtful purchase is a step toward a more intentional fashion industry.
