At LVRSustainable we are committed to doing our part in combating poverty and gender inequality, which is why we’ve re-joined forces with Oxfam, the humanitarian organization dedicated to reducing global poverty through development projects and humanitarian aid, to launch another campaign: Empowering Women, Improving Society.
Onano’s Story
Onano John is a mother of three young children and was eager to find ways to provide for her family. At the time, Oxfam and their partner, New Guinea Fruit, had been providing bee farming training partly supported by the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade. Once Onano heard word of this new initiative, she jumped at the opportunity to learn new skills that could develop into a stable means of income to provide for her family. Oxfam and New Guinea Fruit provided Onano with a starter kit to begin applying the skills she learned and soon enough, she was harvesting her own honey and eventually was able to reinvest her earnings into establishing her own farm.
Onano has now been working as a bee farmer for the last two years and sells her harvest directly to New Guinea Fruit which then resells it to broader markets. Oxfam and New Guinea Fruit continue to support Onano and her business by offering her valuable industry insight, technical support, and advice on how to increase the production and quality of her honey.
Through Oxfam’s continuous support and Onano enthusiastic determination, she has been able to support herself and her family. Onano has become a role model for women in her community, and her story inspires those trying to find ways to make a living and support themselves and their families.
Our latest campaign, Empowering Women, Improving Society, supports ambitious women like Onano to achieve their goals and realize their dreams. From now until mid-November LVRSustainable is contributing entrepreneurial business incubation for women to develop their ideas and start their own businesses. By supporting women and strengthening their independence, their power, and their skills; we also help their families and communities to flourish both socially and economically.
