Louisa Ballou can already call herself responsible for starting major fashion trends. From bright and bold bodycon dresses decorating the bodies of celebrities to the instantly-recognizable asymmetry of swimsuits that are taking over the internet.
When hearing that Ballou grew up on the Charleston coast, South Carolina, one begins to understand her passion for beachwear and tropical-inspired prints. However, when the fashion designer first started in 2019, there wasn’t anything quite like she does out there-bold abstract prints, combined with intricate draping, consistent, unique cuts, and sheer, body-fitting silhouettes. That is perhaps what explains the allure of Louisa Ballou’s namesake brand- it is forward-looking and refreshingly modern. It gives confidence and transforms the attitude of the wearer, leaving them with a pleasant rush and anticipation of what is yet to come.
For this edition, Louisa Ballou sat down with us to share the inspiration behind her newest collection, give her best styling tips, and more.
Read on and discover the coveted selection that is sure to become a bold and powerful addition to your wardrobe for the upcoming season.

What is the main inspiration behind the brand?
At the heart of Louisa Ballou is a celebration of the human form and its relationship to the colors, textures, and shapes of the natural world. Each collection is grounded in research from the fields of art, music, design, and literature that draw inspiration from both the body and nature. From my studio in Charleston, SC, I make art that draws from sources including illustrations, scientific drawings, sculptures, texts, and music to create the hand-painted prints that give each collection its distinct character.

Why did you choose swimwear/resort wear as your main focus?
Although we are continuing our expansion into RTW, swimwear was a natural starting point for the brand given my roots in Charleston. I grew up surfing so the beach was an important part of my childhood and serves as a constant source of inspiration.

What were the main elements/inspirations on your moodboard for this season’s Collection?
This season I drew inspiration from artists including Brice Maden, Charlotte Rudolph, and Francis Picabia. I wanted to bring a sense of movement and rhythm to the prints.

How would you describe your brand’s client, who are they? What makes them differenti?
The Louisa Ballou woman isn’t defined by a target demographic, but rather an attitude. She is alluring and she has an innate curiosity and a dynamic personality.  Our customer is modern, independent, and creative and they exude a confidence that draws you in. They don’t need to convince or impress anyone–they live life on their own terms.

Walk us through the process of creating your collection. Where do you like to begin?
I always begin with research and painting. From there, I continually develop and refine.

What is the most important lesson you have learned so far on your journey as a fashion designer?
Trust your instincts

Don’t be afraid to stand out

If you could pick your personal favorite piece from this collection, which one would it be?
I love the Plunge Dress and the Helios Dress in Night Blooming Orchid.

We’ve seen numerous celebrities rocking your pieces and looking amazing, who would you like to see Louisa Ballou next?
I love seeing the clothes being worn by real women, no matter who they are. I love seeing the clothes out in the world and how our customer interprets them.

Where do you see your brand in 10 years? Are there certain goals or aspirations you already have envisioned?
Our strategy will always be about sustaining steady growth and ensuring longevity beyond the hype to forge a sustainable brand that has a positive impact and inspires emotion.
