How would you describe your personal style? What are some characteristics you would say make it truly “yours”?
In my private life, my style is free. It adjusts according to my mood and is concentrated on comfort. I don’t necessarily prefer a cool, sweet, or sexy style. What I care more about is letting my style match the way that I am feeling, which also includes sports and leisurewear. Anything is a good style as long as it allows me to feel comfortable. I don’t need to label myself as a maverick.

It’s not every day that any of us attend glamorous galas, fashion events, and award shows run us through the creative process behind the scenes of choosing the perfect look for the occasion.
Usually, the style for formal, large-scale occasions requires a multi-party collaboration. It needs different functional roles in the team to play their strengths before finally being presented to the public. Firstly, my stylists prepare suitable options for me in advance, according to different themes and occasions. I then try them individually and discuss them with my team to find the best option. Then I discuss with the makeup and hair team a look that goes well with the clothes so I can finally decide on a styling scheme. Therefore, the presentation of a style requires the efforts and cooperation of different roles rather than relying on one person to accomplish all the work.

Do the roles you take on as an actress have an impact on your personal fashion taste? Is there a specific one you can think of?
It does happen, mainly when we act in fashion dramas. We must completely immerse ourselves in the role for the whole shooting process. What I say, what I do, my manners and my outfit are somewhat similar to the character I’m playing, but when the shooting ends, and I return to my real life, I’m still the same Huang Shengyi who likes simplicity and comfort.

Are there any micro-trends happening in China’s fashion industry that you see going globally this year?
Sure! Now, not only our Chinese brands but also many fashion brands from other countries will add some aspects of Chinese style into their products or take inspiration from Chinese elements to extend them, such as embroidery, ink painting, ancient Chinese culture, etc. I believe in the future, more and more of my country’s flavor will be displayed internationally.

What are your go-to wardrobe staples for the transitional period between winter and spring?
The most versatile jeans and hats, of course! They can keep us warm in this chilly period, not make us look too cumbersome, and are very suitable for the transition from winter to spring.

After many busy, successful years as an actress, singer, performer, and producer, we must know your secret! How do you manage to stay focused, motivated, and inspired?
I think it’s the ability to keep learning. “Lifelong Learning” is the most important lesson my mother taught me. She often told me that only by constantly learning and accepting new things can I consciously maintain concentration, self-discipline, and self-improvement and be motivated to push things in a better direction.

What are you most looking forward to professionally and personally this year?
This year I will still devote most of my time to my identity as an “actress” to the stage play “Let Me Hold Your Hand” since I’ve played many female roles in Chekhov’s works simultaneously; it’s a great challenge for me. Meanwhile, I feel very happy. I’m looking forward to further study in drama and polishing my performance experience.
