For this edition, Extreme E headed to Antofagasta, Chile, marking its first-ever race on the continent. The city of Antofagasta is closely linked with mining activity. Since the mid-19th Century, copper mining has dominated the area’s focus, but more recently has shifted towards innovative and sustainable mining.
Antofagasta Minerals and its Centinela operation, Extreme E’s hosts for the Antofagasta Minerals Copper X Prix, are on a mission to develop mining for a better future and will use the event to demonstrate their innovative, sustainable, and inclusive methods which are transforming this crucial industry.
EXTREME E LAUNCHES RACING FOR ALL INITIATIVE
Furthermore, with the support of The Hamilton Commission, the Racing for All initiative has been launched with the aim of providing opportunities and career paths to brilliant mechanics and engineers who may not have the options so readily handed to them otherwise.
Extreme E is aware of the inequalities in the competitive racing environment and with this initiative it hopes to break the glass door of the industry by providing opportunities for the minorities, in particular to females, minority ethnic, or groups from a lower socio-economic background.
A sixth position on each team is open for all young talents with less than one year’s professional working experience to help gain hands-on experience and learn what it takes to work in a professional racing environment.
Additionally Extreme E is working with consultants from EqualEngineers to help educate the teams on inclusive recruitment processes which ensure all applicants are welcome and considered.
With this single event, Antofagasta Minerals Copper X Prix sheds light on the drastic effects of climate change in some of the world’s most remarkable areas while practicing inclusivity and promoting the adoption of electric cars.
