LVRSustainable supports Oxfam Italy with the new campaign, Give Water, Sustain Women.
LuisaViaRoma has decided to support the work of Oxfam by guaranteeing 500 liters of water, enough for women and their families to drink, wash and cook for a week.
Every day, it takes 200 million hours for women around the world to get clean water.
Institutionally, providing clean water for families is a women’s role in many cultures. By providing clean water, these women can spend time on their education and goals.
The story below features Dorothy. She describes the impact clean water supply, through the installment rain catchment tanks by Oxfam, had on her and her family in their everyday lives. Dorothy’s Story
Dorothy and her husband Nicodemus, live with their seven children in a rural village in the Yangoru-Saussia District. Nicodemus is a WASH cluster leader and member of his community’s WASH committee. Cluster leaders are responsible for managing the water use and hygiene practices within their cluster – groups of 3-5 families who share water supplied by Oxfam installed rain catchment tanks. With sustainable access to clean water near their homes, community members — especially women and children — no longer have to travel each day to collect water from surrounding water sources such as creeks and waterholes.
Other responsibilities of a cluster leader include maintaining improved hygiene standards of the households within their clusters. This includes practices such as drying dishes on a dish rack, disposing of waste in a rubbish pit, drying clothing on a washing line and the use of slab toilets. Since her husband has participated in WASH training in his role as a cluster leader, Dorothy has helped to pass on the information to her children, ensuring that they continue to incorporate good hygiene practices into their daily lives, keeping them clean and healthy.
“He cleans the yard, the house and talks to the children to wash, wash their hands before they eat. Our lives have improved a bit. The children are getting water from the tank to drink. They don’t get sick like before. (Oxfam) came and educated the committee members who then taught us. And we are now teaching our children. We tell them to wash in the morning and in the afternoon and to wash their hands before they eat. I’ve been teaching them as they grow. The bigger children are doing it. They are learning slowly and I am seeing small improvements along the way. When it rains, we use the tank water to cook. When it’s the dry season, we’re careful using the tank water in case it runs out so we get water from the river to cook.”
