Since 1985 Patagonia has pledged 1% of sales to the preservation and restoration of the natural environment. The initiative has resulted in $145 million in cash and in-kind donations to the domestic and international grassroots environmental groups that contribute to the local communities. In 2002  Yvon Chouinard, and Craig Mathews, founder of Patagonia and owner of Blue Ribbon Flies, respectively, created a non-profit corporation with the aim of encouraging other brands to join in on the cause and be a part of the global movement.

1% For The Planet is an alliance of businesses that understand the harmful consequences of leaving the planet unprotected, drawing parallels between the planet’s health and the environmental impact the industry has on it. They wish to turn back the effects and move forward with a more planet-friendly approach in the everyday.

By donating 1% of total annual sales to grassroots environmental groups, members of the alliance are able to make real changes. The following actions come with the benefits of recognition for paving the way for more corporate responsibility in the industry, as well as support and patronage of the conscientious consumers who value commitment to the environment.

The brand promotes connection by linking committed individuals with local organizations, in effect, working to solve current environmental issues. Patagonia Action Works helps discover events, petitions and skilled volunteering opportunities in your local community as well as donate to causes you care about. By involving the community with local organizations, everyone can take part in making a change within the environment.

We the Power

The future of energy is community-owned.

Patagonia’s new campaign, We the Power revolutionizes how we see electric production and the means by which we can work together as a community for sustainable alternatives. By learning and teaching others how it’s possible to generate electricity by non-traditional means we can give back to our communities and in turn produce up to 45% of the EU’s electricity in total.

We the Power follows friends, families and visionaries as they break down legislative barriers and take power back from big energy companies to put it in the hands of locals and strengthen their towns. The film chronicles local cooperatives from deep in Germany’s Black Forest to the streets of ancient Girona in Spain and the urban rooftops of London, England, as they pave the way for a renewable energy revolution and build healthier, financially stable communities.

Together, we can restore power to the people and bring the benefits of clean energy home.
Join an energy community. Invest in one. Or build your own.
