LVRSustainable is proud to introduce a series of stories from women receiving Oxfam Italy’s support through “Give water, Sustain Women”.
Every day, it takes 200 million hours for women around the world to get clean water.
“Bringing clean water to those who need it”: this is the goal that Oxfam – the humanitarian organization dedicated to reducing global poverty through development projects and humanitarian aid, placing the focus on the importance and impact on water and women’s lives worldwide, the project aims to bring clean water to families in need. Institutionally, providing clean water for families is a women’s role in many cultures. By providing clean water, these women can spend time on their education and goals.
The first in this series tells the story of Mariam. She describes honestly the health hardships she’s dealt with as a result of not having clean water as a daily option. Scroll on down to learn more about the situation many women and families are facing around the world on an everyday basis.
Mariam’s Story
Mariam cuts wood to sell to earn an income for her family. It has been five or six years since it has rained in her village. She has had to have an operation to remove kidney stones and knows that dirty water is the cause of this. Many people in her family have also experienced the same thing.
“Our life is water; our life is connected with water. Everything in our life is connected with water, whether it’s food, health or daily life activities. If we don’t have water, we don’t have anything.
There are a lot of health problems here and almost everyone in every household has had to have operations for kidney stones and problems like that. At least two members in each household.
Growing up, the conditions were much better; we had livestock and farming options. We had birds and chickens. Because of the shortage of water, the lands have been ruined.
My husband has been diagnosed with Hep C, it is because of the water. We have been facing a lot of issues with his treatment and his healthcare.
This situation brings us a lot of distress; it really upsets us. We want to be able to put food on the table for our kids and we don’t want to keep begging for it.”
