TOM FORD
At the 2024 Fashion Awards, Tom Ford was honored with the prestigious Outstanding Achievement Award. The American designer’s impressive career in the fashion industry spans almost three decades. Known for his innovative spirit and structured silhouettes, the designer has garnered a cult-like following for his designs, from his time at Gucci to his eponymous brand TOM FORD. Today, Tom Ford has solidified his status as an iconic designer of the modern age. Vintage Gucci pieces from Tom Ford’s era are still highly sought after today. Julia Hobbs donned a stunning low-cut white gown with a cutout on the Fashion Awards red carpet. In 1990 Ford began his tenure at Gucci as Chief Womenswear Designer and was appointed Creative Director in 1994. The internationally acclaimed designer injected new life into the Gucci brand, elevating the brand to a new level. Ford was involved in the establishment of the Gucci Group in 1999, which then became the Kering Group we know today. Serving as the Creative Director and Vice Chairman of the group, Ford went on to become the Chief Designer of Yves Saint Laurent. In 2005, Ford launched his namesake brand TOM FORD which was an instant success. He also served as Chairman of the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA). During his time as Chairman, Ford contributed to establishing New York Fashion Week as one of the leading fashion weeks, expanded the CFDA scholarship fund and inaugurated the Common Thread relief initiative in collaboration with Vogue to support brands and designers during the pandemic. In addition to his success in the fashion industry, Ford is also an award-winning director and producer in the film industry.
Jonathan Anderson
Established in 2008 by Northern Irish designer Jonathan Anderson, JW Anderson began as a distinct collection of attention-grabbing accessories that swiftly established themselves in the British fashion scene. In 2020 the brand opened its first flagship store in London. Having been nominated in 2021 and 2022, Jonathan Anderson received the BFC’s award for Designer of the Year for the first time in 2023. The designer takes elements of womenswear and menswear to create subversive, thought-provoking silhouettes with a hint of humor. Anderson’s unique design approach has made his creations instantly recognizable–whether under his eponymous label or for Loewe–where he has held the position of creative director since 2013. This year, the designer teamed up with film director Luca Guadagnino on the costume design for his film, Challengers, blending the lines between high fashion and pop culture. Stars showed their support for the designer with Ambika Mod and Richard Gadd arriving in quintessential Loewe red-carpet looks, and Jamie Dornan who presented the award for Designer of the Year in a suit designed by Anderson.
16Arlington
Established in 2018 by design duo and couple Marco Capaldo and the late Federica ‘Kikka’ Cavenati, 16Arlington is one of the leading emerging brands of this year. The brand is named after the street where the Italian designers shared their first studio apartment after graduating from Istituto Marangoni in London. The essence of the brand is the meeting of two contrasting aesthetics. Cavenati’s minimalist, sculptural style meets Capaldo’s vision of over-the-top glamour and Italian flair. Combining these opposing design directions creates garments that can be worn for any occasion – from running errands to nights out on the town. The brand quickly catapulted into the spotlight for modernizing eveningwear adorned with sequins, feathers and more. The 16Arlington woman is not limited to a certain age or lifestyle but is characterized by an attitude of spontaneity and fun-loving style. The brand quickly became a red-carpet favorite among celebrities such as Lady Gaga, Kendall Jenner and many more. At the 2024 Fashion Awards, the brand won the award in the category New Establishment Womenswear. Today, Capaldo continues to build the brand in honor of the legacy left by Cavenati, designing garments for the 16Arlington woman.
Chloé
In October 2023, Chemena Kamali was appointed Creative Director of Chloé. The designer began her career as an intern for the brand under Phoebe Philo before working at Saint Laurent. She later returned to the brand as Design Director under Clare Weight Keller and now sits at the brand’s helm. Since 1952 Chloé has been a brand that caters to modern women’s lifestyles and Kamali’s collections have celebrated the femininity at the heart of the brand. Blending romantic design with contemporary power-dressing, delicate fabrics are often paired with bold decorative elements. Her design approach seeks to honor Chloé’s heritage while focusing on the authentic representation of femininity resulting in pieces that maximize versatility and offer flair to the women who wear them. Recent collections have influenced the zeitgeist sparking trends of Bohemian and rock-inspired dressing. At the 2024 Fashion Awards in London, the designer was honored as a Designer of the Year nominee, recognizing the work Kamali has done to make Chloé one of the most sought-after brands globally.
Rick Owens
Another designer at LuisaViaRoma who was nominated for the Designer of the Year award is Rick Owens. Not a new name in fashion circles by any means, Owens started his label in 1994. Known best for its avant-garde aesthetic often dominated by leather and the color black, the brand has garnered a cult following over the years. Owens’ design approach is sometimes referred to as glunge–a mash-up of glamour and grunge–and as a public figure, he has become known as the ‘Dark Lord of Fashion’. After graduating from the Otis College of Art and Design and opening his brand in the Los Angeles area, Owens relocated to Paris in 2003 where the brand still has its headquarters today. His distinctive aesthetic has been fertile ground for several collaborations with brands such as adidas, Converse, Moncler and more. From collaborations that involve diverse demographics to viral fashion shows, Rick Owens has solidified himself as a pillar in the fashion community over the years and his numerous nominations for Designer of the Year reflect his continual influence in the industry.
Ferragamo
Maximilian Davis was nominated for the British Womenswear Designer of the Year award for his work at Ferragamo. This nomination marks an incredible feat for the young designer appointed as Creative Director at Ferragamo in March of 2022. In just over two years at the brand, the Manchester-born designer has made significant headway in revitalizing the historic brand known for its luxury shoes and leather goods. The rebrand includes a modernization of the brand’s iconic logo, the use of empowering, vibrant colors and a more innovative approach to tailoring. Born to parents involved in the fashion industry, Davis graduated from the London College of Fashion in 2020 and shortly after launched his label, Maximilian. It wasn’t long before stars like Dua Lipa and Rihanna were paying attention to the young designer. We need not forget that this is precisely how Ferragamo’s namesake, Salvatore, made a name for himself as the premier shoe designer to Hollywood Stars. Now, with Maximilian Davis at Ferragamo, the brand is gaining renewed popularity among celebrities and younger generations without losing longtime clients of the brand.
Alighieri
The jewelry brand Alighieri seeks to create modern heirlooms – jewelry that can be passed down to future generations. All pieces are handcrafted in England from 100% recycled silver and gold to create her signature textured look. The brand was founded in 2014 by Rosh Mahtani, raised in Zambia and London, and of Indian descent. The story of her grandparents leaving India in 1944, their only possessions being a few gold coins and treasured family heirlooms, influenced her love for jewelry that endures generations. Mahtani studied Italian at Oxford, where she fell in love with the work of Dante Alighieri which ultimately gave way to the name of her brand. The Italian poet’s work inspired the beginning of her jewelry line. She started her collection with a piece of jewelry dedicated to each Canto of Dante’s The Divine Comedy. His journey throughout the story, while being lost and uncertain, impacted a young Mahtani as she found her way in the world. Alighieri is an amalgamation of the designer’s passion for storytelling and cherished artifacts. The jewelry brand was honored with a nomination for British Accessories Designer at the 2024 London Fashion Awards. Each handcrafted piece in their collection tells a story and is created to be passed down so that each generation can carry the strength of their ancestors while writing their own story.
Moncler
Closing out the momentous night in fashion, Moncler CEO Remo Ruffini was honored with the Trailblazer Award celebrating innovation and creativity that has helped to shape the fashion industry. This tribute builds off of the Business Leader award given to Ruffini in 2019. At the event at the Royal Albert Hall in London stars like Asap Rocky, Ellie Goulding and Maria Sharapova among others paid tribute to Ruffini with their red-carpet looks. Since 2003, the CEO has worked to transform Moncler from its beginnings as a down-jacket maker to a leading global luxury brand. In 2013, the brand went public on the Milan Stock Exchange, and with the acquisition of Stone Island in 2021, Moncler became the Moncler Group. Moncler Group has created numerous initiatives that help shape the contemporary fashion landscape, including the noteworthy Moncler Genius. Launched in 2018, Moncler Genius is a platform for co-creation that has built the company’s connection to art, design, music, sport and culture through innovative brand activations, collaborative capsule collections and campaigns. As a CEO, Ruffini prioritizes innovation and creativity to the highest degree. In his acceptance speech, he states: “Creativity lives where dreams meet energy. This is how we build our creative vision in Moncler, in a constant pursuit of the extraordinary.” Highlighting the brand’s connection to up-and-coming geniuses, musical artist Wizkid closed out the night wearing Moncler for a performance of his song Troubled Mind.
