Tina Craig is an innovative firecracker who built her brand with the sole purpose to prove beauty should be accessible to everyone, throwing out all of the unnecessary wastes and ingredients that are only complicating and adding more stressors to your daily skincare routine. Gone are the days when 13 products are vital in maintaining perfect skin, thanks to the arrival of U Beauty with remarkable results from just a handful of products. Get to know Tina Craig, the beauty creator and mastermind behind the beauty brand, in our latest Q&A deciphering the inspiration and logics behind the multifunctional beauty products taking over the beauty world.
The Interview
The desire to simplify your lengthy daily skincare routine largely motivated you to found U Beauty. What else inspired you to launch your own brand?
My journey started fifteen years ago and since then, I’ve been privy to so much evolution, from within the blogging world to the initial onset of Instagram to changes in the skincare industry. As an influencer, I’ve also been exposed to the latest and greatest in skincare. While I’ve loved receiving the best that brands have to offer, I realized one of the downsides was that I was experiencing major cosmetic confusion—and concern for the waste that comes with copious amounts of products and packaging. I was beholden to using up to 15 products twice daily and my skin wasn’t even getting better. It was actually getting increasingly irritated. I realized there had to be a better way, and if I felt like this, other people did, too.
Tell us about U Beauty’s two hero products and how they work together.
The Resurfacing Compound and SUPER Smart Hydrator are designed to work in harmony and they’re the ideal complement to one another. With a strategic blend of actives, the Compound brightens, tightens and gently resurfaces your skin. Then, the rich, buttery SUPER intuitively hydrates with an unprecedented five different hyaluronic acids to deliver moisture more deeply than ever before.
I call my routine the Four Cs: First, cleanse and wait for your skin to dry. Next, gently apply the Compound by massaging it into your face. Then the SUPER to seal in the Compound and hydrate your skin all day and beyond (for up to 48 hours). Finally, cover with SPF for daytime. That’s it!
How did years of being a beauty and fashion influencer help you bring something unique to the skincare world?
I operate as a consumer first because if I don’t have a need for it, why would I expect anyone else to? I’ll admit my access as an influencer has magnified and accelerated my ability to make observations about the industry. Like I said before, the number of products I receive as an influencer helped me to identify that “hey, cosmetic confusion is a real issue” sooner than I might have otherwise—but the central problem is one to which everyone could relate. Which is why U Beauty is all about simplicity and efficacy.
When you created the Resurfacing Compound, you wanted to make a product that does the work of six in one. What’s the most surprising feature of the Compound?
The versatility of it has been shocking, honestly. We didn’t design it to necessarily treat acne, yet I’ve heard so many people say that it takes care of blemishes, for example. The SUPER is also surprisingly versatile: It happens to work as a great primer, and I’m all about multi-purpose products.
What has been the most surprising part of your U Beauty adventure so far?
This whole experience has been incredible and continues to enlighten me. It was a bit of a revelation to realize that what’s not in a skincare product is even more important than what is, which is why we excluded over 1,380 known toxins when developing our Compound formula.
I’ve also rethought what luxury means: Simplicity and cutting back on waste is true luxury. Every bottle of U Beauty is 100% recyclable and made of recycled plastic, along with recycled paper packaging. When you have high-performance products that work, marketing hype isn’t necessary; the results speak for themselves.
When it comes to U Beauty, what question do you get asked the most?
Probably that if U Beauty will work for their skin type, especially sensitive skin. Not only do we create our products with sensitive skin in mind, U Beauty is for every skin type, gender, age and ethnicity. Our SIREN Capsule technology ensures the ingredients aren’t released all over your skin but instead, only where your skin needs them so as a result, you get no irritation and nothing but benefit.
What’s the most common skin concern people have these days? (For example, dry skin, fine lines and wrinkles, dark spots, etc.) How does U Beauty come into play in addressing it?
People, regardless of their skin type and age, want healthy-looking skin that naturally glows. I’ve always felt that good skin means self-confidence and that sentiment is increasingly prevalent. I’m proud to say our products do a great job of doing that; I like to say U Beauty is self-confidence in a bottle.
What’s your best advice for someone who wants to make a change when it comes to their skincare and in turn, their skin?
Adopt a less is more, or rather, a less is better philosophy. You don’t have to use more to do more for your skin. Investing in a couple great products that work will save you time, energy, money and your skin in the long run. Oh, and stop using hot water to wash your face! Cold or lukewarm water only, as the skin on our face is delicate and hot water is not our friend.
What’s next for you and U Beauty?
I’ll never launch a product unless it fills a white space and simultaneously delivers incredible results, multiple benefits and simplifies your life. We’re committed to effective, sustainable products that yield results, first and foremost. So look out for exciting things to come but know they’ll only arrive when they’ve been perfected—and up to my standards!
