LVR catches up with Jasmin Larian, the designer behind the ‘cult’ bags of the season.
The L.A. designer Jasmin Larian has always been ahead of the curve. After finishing up at FIT, Larian was one of the first to start making flower crowns and turbans in the early music festival days. Since then, she has taken the fashion world by storm with the iconic Ark Bag from her label Cult Gaia. Loved by instagrammers and influencers, the bag is minimal and at the same time statement and instantly recognizable. The bag was originally launched in bamboo and is now also available in a sophisticated acrylic version. The designer recently launched a ready-to-wear collection, as well as other highly-covetable accessories and bags.
How did you decide to launch your own brand?
It was something I always knew I was going to do. I come from a family of creatives and entrepreneurs, so there was never a question in my mind.
What’s behind the name Cult Gaia?
Gaia is the Greek goddess of mother earth and the daughter of chaos – the most creative force there is. And every great brand and institution is cult like in its ability to bring kindred spirits together.
The ‘Ark’ bag has reached ‘cult’ status on social media. Can you tell us about how it became such an Instagram hit?
Our pieces are viral because people are compelled to take a picture of them and share them. They are so unique, instantly recognizable, and makes people ask, ‘where is that from’?
Why do you think the ‘Ark’ Bag is so popular?
Its different, beautifully made, our packaging is beautiful and its timeless.
How does sustainability play into your design process? How important is it?
Bamboo is something we predominantly use in our line and is one of the most sustainable natural resources. We always think of sustainability and how we can be more sustainable, but it doesn’t run our business.
What can we look forward to next from Cult Gaia?
Our RTW line has been growing, and there’s been a lot of excitement from our customers. We are very excited to present the full look to our fans. And of course, more accessories that make you look twice.
What inspires you the most?
Nature. Perfectly, imperfect.
Do you have a fashion icon?
My muses are always changing.
